Karmojibi Nari (KN) which means working women is an initiative for working women in Bangladesh. In May 1991, KN was initiated by a group of energetic young women activists with an experience of glorious student, labor, and socio-cultural movements of Bangladesh, imbued with the sprit of liberation war 1971. KN firmly believes that all women are ‘working women’. It is also convinced that women, who have come out of ‘home’ to meet their economic needs, should protect themselves; and that will inspire others to be involved in the public sphere. This is why KN has been fighting for women’s ‘identity’ as ‘working women’ and providing ‘platform’ for movement at national and grassroots level. Karmojibi Nari is not a woman- organization in the conventional sense; not even a trade union in the traditional sense. Karmojibi Nari is an organization of woman-workers, striving to establish rights, dignity and authority of woman-workers along with women and laborers. This organization is ever first of its kind in Bangladesh. KN is fighting relentlessly and advancing with success in a view to liberating woman-movement from the domination of aristocracy and upper class and labor- movement from the domination of patriarchy through upholding the agenda of woman-workers, as woman-workers is a vanguard for social changes in Bangladesh. In 1991 this organisation started functioning from a very small scale. Since 2006, it has transformed into a matured organisation in its actions and framework and in its expansion of the realm of work and also in manpower. Over the time KN has reached to about 450 thousand members of women workers and developed organization of woman-workers both formal and informal sector through forming cell at factory and community level. Karmojibi Nari is moving forward aiming to spread its boundaries and activities throughout the whole country. To know details history please click here. |
